iPhone 12 sales were suspended in France after certain tests found that the device exceeded radiation levels. Apple refuted these allegations but it still agreed to release a software update to fix the iPhone 12's radiation issue. This fix will arrive with the iOS 17.1 update that will turn off a feature that interfered with the iPhone 12's radiation level.
"For more than a decade, iPhones have had an off-body detection feature that allows for slightly higher transmit power when you set the phone down, for example, on a table. This has been thoroughly tested and verified internationally to be an effective mechanism to comply with SAR requirements. The slightly higher power is not applicable to SAR compliance since the phone is on the table, not on your body," Apple explained in its support page.
"The ANFR was using a testing protocol that does not account for this off-body detection mechanism, thereby not allowing a slight increase in power when it is appropriate. So for users in France, we have released a software update that turns off this feature to accommodate this test protocol," it added.
According to the iOS 17.1 beta 3 update, the Action Button will come with an important change, as noted by 9to5Mac. This change will essentially require users to press the Action Button for longer to activate it when inside their pockets. This will only be required when the iPhone detects that it's inside a pocket so that it prevents the Action Button from getting activated accidentally.
