iPhone 15 series launching soon: 10 things we know so far about the phones

It’s almost that time of the year where we’ll see a new batch of iPhones, and memes that follow on how expensive the devices are, and how Android phones are much better. Every year Apple releases a new series of iPhones in September, and this time too we’re expecting the same based on reliable leaks and sources. Since we’re inching closer to the launch, we take a look at 10 things we know about the iPhone 15 series so far.

iPhone 15 series: what we know so far

iPhone 15: Launch date, first sale

There’s no official announcement yet but the iPhone 15 series is highly expected to launch globally on September 12th or 13th. Its first sale is also expected to take place on September 22nd, a week after the debut.

iPhone 15: names, number of models

Apple has been launching four iPhone models every year, and this year too the same is expected. In the latest iPhone lineup, we’re expecting the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Some reports suggest there will be an iPhone 15 Ultra, which could possibly replace the ‘Pro Max’ moniker.

iPhone 15: design

Based on leaks and renders, there isn’t much of a change on the overall design of the iPhone 15 series. This time, though, Apple could offer the Dynamic Island display with the pill notch on all iPhone 15 models. It was introduced last year but only on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

But the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models are going to be refreshed with a new titanium body replacing the stainless steel. These iPhones are also said to feature slimmer bezels than the previous models.

iPhone 15: colours

The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will most likely come in the same set of colours. The options could be Midnight (black), Starlight (white), (Product)RED along with two new colours – light blue and light pink. The iPhone 15 Pro models with their titanium finish will come in a new ‘Titan Gray’ and dark blue colours along with the standard Silver and Space Black.

iPhone 15: processor

The chipset will be one major differentiator between the upcoming iPhones. The iPhone 15 and 15 Plus will most likely be powered by last year’s A16 Bionic chip. Whereas, the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max are in line to get the new A17 Bionic chip. This would also be the debut for Apple’s new chip. This is what rumours suggest, and the same practice was followed last year too with the iPhone 15 series.

iPhone 15: RAM and storage

The maximum RAM capacity that Apple has offered so far has been 6GB but with the iPhone 15 Pro models, it could introduce 8GB of RAM. Storage is also expected to be bumped this year with 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB variants for the Pro models. This would make it the first time Apple has introduced a 2TB iPhone. Even the base model is said to come with 256GB and not 128GB of storage.

The vanilla iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will most likely continue with 12GB, 256GB and 512GB storage variants.

iPhone 15: cameras

In terms of camera upgrades, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus are expected to come with a 48MP primary camera, and a 12MP ultra-wide angle lens. The iPhone 15 Pro will also house a 48MP primary camera, a 12MP ultra-wide angle lens and a 12MP telephoto lens. The iPhone 15 Pro Max is tipped to house the new 48MP Sony IMX903 sensor, a 12MP ultra-wide angle lens, and a 12MP telephoto periscope lens. Up front, all four iPhones are expected to house the same 12MP front camera.

iPhone 15: battery, charging

Apple typically doesn’t reveal the battery capacities of its iPhones but the internet manages to get the details. The rumoured battery specifications of the upcoming iPhone 15 series are also out. It’s obviously going to be higher than the previous models starting with the iPhone 15 that could come with a 3,877mAh battery. The bigger iPhone 15 Plus is said to pack a 4,912mAh battery.

As for the iPhone 15 Pro, it could be a 3,650mAh battery, and a 4,852mAh on the iPhone 15 Pro Max. Apple is also highly expected to adopt USB-C for the iPhone 15 series, which would not just bring universal charging but faster speeds as well.

iPhone 15: price

This year’s iPhones are heavily rumoured to cost much higher than the previous models up to $100 more to be precise. A recent report by Digitimes listed out the possible pricing for the entire iPhone 15 lineup. The iPhone 15 is said to start at $799 (Rs 66,100), while the iPhone 15 Plus will have a starting price of $899 (Rs 74,400).

The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max will reportedly start at $1,099 (Rs 90,800 approx) and $1,299 (Rs 1,07,300 approx), respectively for the base models.

iPhone 15: India availability

The iPhone 15 series will launch globally including in India. Apple has also started assembling the iPhone 15 in India, according to a recent report. In comparison to previous iPhones assembled in India, Apple has kickstarted this process months ahead this time.
