Pink WhatsApp scam

  • WhatsApp users have been reportedly getting links for this Pink WhatsApp version, and to download the app. This app claims to be a new version of WhatsApp, and it also comes with a new pink theme that you can use.
  • It’s however a malicious link, and downloading this fake WhatsApp version can actually install malware on your phone, according to a tweet by Mumbai Police.
  • This malicious link can cause further damage as it could even affect other users that you chat with on WhatsApp. Another instance is that once the malware is in your phone, you could start seeing several advertisements. The worst case scenario is when hackers take control over your phone, and access your personal and sensitive information such as photos, messages, and contacts.

How to prevent this WhatsApp scam

This scam follows one of the most common ways which is by forwarding a link to multiple users. The link and the corresponding message could also be crafted in such a way to entice the user to download it. It’s important to remember here that any update to WhatsApp will be available only through the Google Play Store or App Store. So if there’s any message claiming to offer a new version of WhatsApp, is clearly a scam.

Also, any link that might seem even a little bit suspicious should be avoided. It’s also advisable to inform your friends and family if you come across any such links. This Pink WhatsApp scam is also not new as it first appeared in April 2021 but it seems to have come back again.
