The Redmi Note 17 series appears to be inching closer to its India debut. Ahead of the official launch in China, what is believed to be the standard Redmi Note 17 has surfaced on the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification website, alongside its rumoured POCO-branded counterpart. The listing suggests Xiaomi is preparing to bring both devices to the Indian market in the coming months.
The BIS database includes two Xiaomi smartphones carrying model numbers 2607DRA18I and 2607DPC18I. While the certification does not reveal any hardware specifications, reports indicate the former could launch as the Redmi Note 17, while the latter may arrive as the POCO M8 Plus. Xiaomi has followed a similar strategy in the past by introducing nearly identical smartphones under Redmi and POCO branding, with differences usually limited to design, software tweaks, or pricing.
The certification comes shortly after it was confirmed that the Redmi Note 17 series will debut in China later this month. Based on the brand’s previous launch timelines, the lineup is expected to make its way to global markets, including India, a few months after its China unveiling.
Although Xiaomi has yet to confirm the specifications, leaks have already revealed what to expect from the Chinese version of the Redmi Note 17. The smartphone is tipped to feature a 6.83-inch flat 1.5K AMOLED display and an in-display fingerprint scanner. Powering the device could be Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 6s Gen 4 chipset. While it is not expected to deliver peak performance, the processor should comfortably handle everyday tasks such as social media, streaming, multitasking, and casual gaming. It would still be an upgrade over the Redmi Note 15’s Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 chipset, suggesting better overall performance.
Battery details remain under wraps, but reports suggest the Redmi Note 17 will pack a large-capacity battery with support for 67W wired fast charging. Redmi has also teased battery upgrades for the Note 17 series. For comparison, the Redmi Note 15 in China houses a 5,800mAh battery. If accurate, it would be a major upgrade for the Redmi Note 17, at least in terms of battery endurance.
On the camera front, the Chinese variant is tipped to feature a 50MP primary sensor. The smartphone is also expected to ship with Android 16-based HyperOS 3.1 and offer a water-resistant build, although the exact IP rating has yet to be revealed.
It is worth noting that Xiaomi often tweaks specifications between its Chinese and global releases. Previous Redmi Note smartphones have arrived in international markets with different processors, slightly smaller battery capacities, or camera configurations, so the final hardware of the Indian Redmi Note 17 and the rumoured Poco M8 Plus could differ from their Chinese counterparts.
For now, the BIS certification is another indication that Xiaomi’s popular Note lineup is moving closer to launch in India. If the leaked specifications hold, the Redmi Note 17 could appeal to buyers seeking a balanced everyday smartphone with an AMOLED display, a large battery, and capable cameras. If you currently own a Redmi Note 14 or 15, the upgrade might be incremental, but users of older Note series smartphones could see significant improvements. We should still wait for more concrete details to see if the Redmi Note 17 is a worthy upgrade over its predecessor and rivals alike.
