Samsung will reportedly start manufacturing laptops in India from next month onwards

"Samsung will start to make laptops here. The Noida plant, the company's largest mobile phone manufacturing factory, will house the additional lines that will be used for making laptops," a source told the publication. Another source confirmed the annual production capacity numbers and stated that the laptop manufacturing capacity entails an investment of about Rs 100-200 crore.

This move will make Samsung the newest foreign manufacturer to make laptops in India. It should be noted a few other manufacturers such as HP, Dell, and Acer have already set up laptop assembly lines in India.

This move comes a few months after the government announced plans to limit the import of laptop computers. The idea is to reduce the dependency on imports from China. It is also hoped that the move will spur the 'Make in India' movement and make laptop manufacturers manufacture devices within the country. It should be noted that the ban will not affect the import of parts of laptops. So manufacturers, such as Samsung, can still set up assembly plants for laptops.
