Tecno has unveiled a new concept smartphone that has a rollable display. It’s called the ‘Tecno Phantom Ultimate’ and its display rolls from the side to expand into a bigger phone. This is the second concept smartphone from Tecno with the first having showcased earlier this year in January.
Tecno Phantom Ultimate rollable phone
Tecno showcased its new rollable phone in a YouTube video where it demonstrated the display. In the video, we can see the Tecno Phantom Ultimate’s display expand into a bigger screen from the side with the touch of a button on top. A live wallpaper is visible on the screen that expands simultaneously with the display as it’s rolled out.
Normally, the Tecno Phantom Ultimate has a 6.55-inch display that expands into a 7.11-inch display once rolled out. The rear panel also houses the extra display that acts as an Always On display. Tecno is using a single-drive motor system for the display to roll out from the phone. In terms of specs, the Tecno Phantom Ultimate’s display is an AMOLED screen with 2,296 x 1,596 pixels resolution and 388 PPI.
This is only a concept smartphone so we’re not seeing it in the market anytime soon. But it does show the future path that smartphones will take soon. We’ve been seeing concept smartphones with rollable displays, especially from LG, and Samsung has also given us a sneak peak at future smartphone designs. But these are far from launching commercially as we’re still getting used to foldable phones.

Speaking of which, Tecno is currently working on its first clamshell-folding smartphone, the V Flip. Leaks on the Tecno V Flip are already out revealing a rather unconventional cover display. Tecno also launched its foldable phone, the Phantom V Fold in India this year at Rs 88,888, a price tag much affordable than competitors.
