AI research company OpenAI has rolled out ChatGPT’s much-awaited voice feature for free users. It is worth mentioning that the feature was initially rolled out in September, but was only limited to paid subscribers. With this, even free users can now utilise their voice to pose questions to ChatGPT, receiving responses, and engaging in continuous conversation.

ChatGPT voice feature details

  • In a post on X (formerly Twitter), OpenAI announced that ChatGPT with voice is now accessible to all free users.
  • Users can download the app on their phones and initiate a conversation by tapping the headphones icon.
  • The new voice feature allows for a back-and-forth conversation with ChatGPT.
  • It begins with the user asking a question, and the interaction can be ended manually or by stopping speaking.
  • ChatGPT responds to the question and permits interruptions for continuous conversation.

On the other hand, OpenAI’s team is facing challenges due to the sudden removal of their CEO Sam Altman, and ongoing negotiations for his return.

The demonstration in OpenAI’s post on X humourously references the unfolding drama. In one scenario, someone asks ChatGPT about ordering pizzas for a team similar in size to OpenAI’s staff, many of whom have recently considered quitting unless the entire board resigns.

Last week, OpenAI’s board dismissed Altman, citing concerns about his consistent communication with the board. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has since extended an invitation for Altman and his team to establish a new division at Microsoft, but Altman is considering a return to OpenAI.

Former OpenAI president Greg Brockman, who resigned following Altman’s removal, shared OpenAI’s X announcement, emphasising that trying the new feature significantly alters the ChatGPT experience.
