AI smartphone with an app-free interface

  • At the ongoing Mobile World Congress 2024, Deutsche Telekom introduced a concept smartphone that has an app-free interface. It has been developed by Deutsche Telekom in collaboration with Qualcomm and Brain.AI.
  • This concept phone relies completely on AI so there’s no app installed on the device, according to a report by Android Authority.
  • So instead of any app on the smartphone, users will rely on an AI assistant to use the device. It isn’t clear how exactly this would be possible since there might be several limitations for the AI.
  • Some examples of how the AI smartphone would work include giving prompts to the AI, and getting suggestions or recommendations for travel, food and products to buy. Another example is taking a picture and asking AI to send it to your contacts.
  • The AI smartphone will be able to perform tasks and functions that would normally require two or three apps to complete it.
  • Using AI, it takes over the functions of a wide range of apps and can carry out all daily tasks that would normally require several applications on the device.

According to the company CEO Tim Hoettges, the company sees an app-free smartphone in the future. “I can tell you that in 5-10 years from now, nobody from us will use apps anymore,” Hoettges said.

This is only a concept for now, and there’s no word on when the AI smartphone will be commercially launched or if it ever will. But it’s not impossible to think of a future like this for smartphones seeing how AI really is taking over more complex tasks.
