This means that phones starting with the Pixel 6 will get an extended lifespan.
Google is planning at least five years of software updates for Pixel devices powered by the Tensor chipset, according to a report by 9to5Google. This means that starting with the Pixel 6, Google will provide five years of Android updates. The Pixel 6 series launched with Android 12, and it's currently running on Android 13 so it should get up to Android 17 with two more years added to its roadmap.
The Pixel 7 and Pixel 8 series will also receive five years of Android updates if Google sticks to this plan. This would be a great deal of relief for people who plan on using their Pixel phones for years. It will also push Google ahead of Samsung who is currently leading with four years of updates for some of its phones.
But both OEMs are still far behind when it comes to Apple who is known for providing software updates for years. It's still a major improvement for the Pixel phones.
