Highlights
  • Warner Bros. is working on a Harry Potter original series for its new streaming service ‘Max’, formerly known as HBO Max.
  • The series will be based on the popular franchise and will feature an entirely new cast.
  • JK Rowling will also be part of the series as executive producer.

Harry Potter fans can stop rewatching the movies, and instead look forward to a new original series. A new “decade-long” Harry Potter TV series has officially been announced by Warner Bros. Discovery, for its new Max streaming service, after being rumoured earlier. There is no release date yet but it is confirmed to stream not only in the US but globally as well.

The series will be based on JK Rowling’s Harry Potter books, and the author will also be the executive producer of the series. What we’ll essentially see is a revival of the same characters, dramatic locations but with a new cast. While a new series adaption may be frowned upon by some fans, Warner Bros has assured it will be made with “the same epic craft, love and care this global franchise is known for.” Watch the motion teaser released by Warner Bros here.

Harry Potter TV series: what we know so far

The Harry Potter series is expected to have seven seasons with each of them following the books. “Each season will be authentic to the original books and bring Harry Potter and these incredible adventures to new audiences around the world, while the original, classic and beloved films will remain at the core of the franchise and available to watch globally,” Warner Bros said in its release.

The announcement was made during the unveiling of the Max streaming service that is scheduled to launch on May 23rd in the US. The new streaming service will feature HBO Max originals and Discovery+ shows as well. It will be then rolled out in a phased manner this fall for users in Latin America. For other markets including Asia and Europe, the Max streaming service will arrive only next year.

In India, HBO Max shows were available on the Disney+ Hotstar platform but were removed recently due to the new developments. It’s too early to see if Max will arrive as a standalone service or merge with an existing one in India.
