A new day and a new iPhone 16 rumour. This time it is about the iPhone 16 Pro series. Both the iPhone 16 Pro and the Pro Max could get a new 48MP ultrawide camera. This would be a notable upgrade over the iPhone 15 Pro series’ 12MP ultrawide shooter. Here’s why that could matter.
iPhone 16 Pro series’ camera upgrades
- A 48MP ultrawide camera: As per tipster OvO Baby Sauce OvO on Weibo, the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max could get a 48MP ultrawide sensor. This could be 1/2.55-inch in size with 0.7µm pixel size.
- An upgraded ultrawide camera could deliver better photos, perhaps even closer to the main camera quality. But more importantly, a larger megapixel count could aid in printouts and macro mode.
- The ultrawide camera could produce 12MP pixel-binned shots (1.4µm pixel size) that are clearer in low-lit conditions than the output from their predecessors.
- iPhone 16 Pro Max’s main camera: The Pro Max is rumoured to get a custom 48MP Sony IMX903 sensor. The predecessor had a Sony IMX-803. The new sensor is said to be bigger in size: 1/1.14-inch. It could also benefit from a 14-bit analogue-to-digital converter (ADC) and a digital gain control (DGC).
- Since there is no mention of the iPhone 16 Pro’s main camera, that could be the same 48MP shooter on the iPhone 15 Pro (IMX-803).

- iPhone 16 Pro series could get an anti-reflective technology to counter lens flare. This could also thwart artefacts such as a streak, a halo, or a burst of light.
