Electric vehicles today have captured a sizeable chunk of the market as manufacturers strive to offer a higher driving range and governments deploy charging infrastructure across the country. Recently, Mahindra launched the Mahindra XUV400 electric SUV in India to take on the Tata Nexon EV, a favourite amongst buyers in the segment. Both the SUVs offer 400km+ claimed driving range in their long-range formats with larger battery packs. However, the real-world figures tell a different story. 

Mahindra XUV400 vs Tata Nexon EV MAX range comparison

Autocar India has conducted elaborate mileage tests on the Mahindra XUV400 and Tata Nexon EV MAX electric SUVs. The tests according to the publishing house were conducted under the fixed city and highway routes, with topped-up batteries and manufacturer, recommended tyre pressures. Air conditioning was set to 22-degree celsius and accessories such as stereo, lights and blinkers were used whenever required mimicking the real-world scenarios. 

The Mahindra XUV400 with its larger 39.4kWh battery was tested. The XUV400 returned a combined city and highway range of 253km on a single charge. The vehicle was driven in Eco mode in the city where it returned 7.11 km/kWh of efficiency. As the EV hit the highway in Fast mode, the XUV400 returned an efficiency of 5.89 km/kWh.

The Nexon EV, MAX on the other hand, with its 40.5kWh battery pack managed to deliver a combined range of 266km on a single charge. In the city, the Nexon EV delivered 6.6 km/kWh, which was reduced to 6.4 km/kWh on the highway. 

For users looking to drive in the city, the Mahindra XUV400 could be a better buy given that the EV runs more distance per kWh. However, highway users could be better suited to the Tata Nexon EV MAX.

The Tata Nexon EV MAX starts at Rs 16.49 lakh (ex-showroom) and goes up to Rs 18.99 lakh (ex-showroom). The Mahindra XUV400 on the other hand is being offered at Rs 18.99 lakh (ex-showroom).
