MIUI is Xiaomi’s in-house custom skin that is based on Android. Apparently, MIUI is the longest-running Android skin on the market with over 13 years of development. Now, according to reports MIUI 14 could be the last version of MIUI. Instead, the brand will introduce a brand new MI OS, probably around later this year or early 2024. The MI OS project was spotted in the testing earlier this year and is likely to be present on the Xiaomi 14 series.

MIUI could be replaced by MI OS

MI-OS
  • Tipster DigitalChatStation claims that MIUI 14 could be the last official version of Xiaomi’s custom Android skin.
  • The company will continue to support older versions of MIUI with updates but there won’t be any MIUI 15.
  • The new in-house developed MI OS custom skin is expected to come with a major UI overhaul over the MIUI layer.
  • Xiaomi already trademarked the MiOS name and mios.cn domain in China.
  • There are chances that Xiaomi could develop the OS from scratch instead of using AOSP as the source code like the current MIUI.
  • Xiaomi has not confirmed the news and is completely silent on the matter.
  • MIUI currently has over 564 million global monthly active users

As said, the new MI OS was spotted under testing in March 2023 in an alpha version. This will be introduced with the upcoming Xiaomi 14 series. Even if Xiaomi develops a brand new OS like Huawei’s Harmony OS, it is still required to sell phones with official Android skin in global markets.

Developing a new OS will aid Xiaomi in creating its own ecosystem and will give it the freedom to develop specific features that will work across devices like phones, tablets, smartwatches, etc and even seamlessly connect with each other.
