New users on X (Twitter) to pay subscription fee to post, like content; feature under testing

Highlights
  • X is testing this in two countries for now.
  • Without the subscription, users will get a read-only version of X.
  • It’s only for new users though as existing users will not be affected by the change.

X (formerly Twitter) is bringing a change to the platform that will most likely disappoint a lot of people. New users will now have to sign up for a paid subscription called ‘Not a Bot’ that will give them access to basic features such as creating posts, and interacting with other posts. X has started testing Not a Bot in New Zealand and the Philippines.

X starts charging new users for basic features

X’s new subscription is only for new users who sign up to use the platform. It doesn’t affect existing users. So any new X user in New Zealand and the Philippines will now have to pay for a $1 (Rs 83 approx) yearly subscription while signing up on the platform. With this subscription, users will be able to post content, like posts, reply, repost and quote other posts on X.

Users still have the option to not get the subscription but they’ll miss out on these features. Instead, they’ll get a read-only version of X where they can only read posts, watch videos and follow accounts.

“This new program aims to defend against bots and spammers who attempt to manipulate the platform and disrupt the experience of other X users. We look forward to sharing more about the results soon,” according to X. It also clarifies that this is “not a profit driver” but highlights how subscriptions have been the main solution at reducing bots from the platform.

X already limits several key features to its paid members. X Premium is available for individuals at Rs 650 per month, and Rs 6,800 per year. With this paid subscription, you get access to features such as the edit button, post longer videos, themes, higher visibility, and more. Although the $1 fee seems less, but X is revoking very basic features that are free on every other social media platform. It’s only a test for now, and in two countries but X is expected to expand this in more countries seeing how it’s been following a paid model.
