Redmi Y2 Android Pie update starts rolling out in India

The Redmi Y2 Android Pie update has finally started reaching the phone’s users in India. The stable version of MIUI 10 that’s based on Android 9 Pie has started reaching for the users of the Redmi Y2 over the air in a phased manner. The smartphone was launched in India in June last year with MIUI 9.5, based on Android Oreo. Earlier in February, the Chinese tech giant started recruiting beta testers for the MIUI 10 Global Beta ROM based on Android Pie. The company was expected to release the Android Pie update for the Redmi Y2 earlier this year, but it later changed the plans to roll out the new firmware at a later date.

The Redmi Y2 Android Pie update’s firmware is dubbed “MIUI 10.3.3.0.PEFMIXM” and is roughly 1.4GB in size. With the upgrade, App Lock now supports locking Google Contacts, and the new firmware also fixes the issue that stopped some users deleting contacts from their SIM cards. There’s a new customisable lock screen clock on board. Now you can use your fingerprint to open the Home screen once you unlock the device using the Face Unlock function and stayed on the lock screen. The update also fixes a bug while receiving a call in the Game Turbo mode. Apart from Android Pie, the new software update brings Android security patch for July for the smartphone.

To recall, the Redmi Y2 was originally launched at the starting price of Rs 9,999, but is now available starting at Rs 8,999. The phone is a selfie-centric offering with a 16-megapixel front camera with a soft LED flash unit. The handset supports AI beauty feature, auto HDR, and pixel binning technology. At the rear, you have a 12-megapixel primary snapper, aided by a 5-megapixel secondary shooter.

As for the other specifications, Xiaomi Redmi Y2 offers a 5.99-inch HD+ display and is powered by a 2GHz Snapdragon 625 processor. The handset has a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor and an infrared sensor to let you control smart TVs. The connectivity features include 4G LTE, dual-SIM slots, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2, and GPS with GLONASS. A 3,080mAh battery completes the list of the specifications.
