“The Redmi Note 5 and Note 5 Pro were both launched with Android 7.1.2 Nougat earlier this year”
Xiaomi‘s Redmi Note 5-series has surfaced on benchmarking site Geekbench to make an interesting revelation. Both the Redmi Note 5 (review) and Redmi Note 5 Pro (review) can be seen running Android 9 Pie, which is a successor to Android 8 Oreo. Hence, it’s likely that Xiaomi will roll out the update via OTA to the devices in the near future. If so, this will be the second major update for the handsets that come pre-loaded with Android 7 Nougat out of the box and were later upgraded to Android 8 Oreo.
Android 9 Pie didn’t boost the performance of Redmi Note 5 and Redmi Note 5 Pro significantly, as per Geekbench. Both the handsets with their respective Snapdragon 625 and Snapdragon 636 chipsets scored 4917 and 4882 points in the multi-core test. While the single-core test of Redmi Note 5 and Note 5 Pro was settled at 1340 and 1349 points respectively. Even with Android Oreo-based MIUI 10, the devices nailed somewhat similar scores.
Surprisingly, the benchmark site also has a listing of Redmi Note 5 Pro with Snapdragon 660 SoC ticking at its core. The handset is unlikely to see the light of day, and the company seems to have developed it just for testing. The use of slightly improved chipset helped the device etched better results though. It scored 1,560 points in Geekbench single-core test and 5,212 points in multi-core test. Furthermore, the device had 3GB of RAM and was running Android 8.1 Oreo.
As of now, Xiaomi hasn’t specified if and when it’s planning to roll out Android 9 Pie to the Redmi Note 5 smartphone lineup. Also, it isn’t necessarily true that if a device has hit a benchmarking site, it’s sure to arrive in real-world. Therefore, take the information with a grain of salt.
