Electric cars are yet to be widely adopted in India and are far from being the preferred choice of most people when purchasing a car. This is largely due to the concerns over the EV infrastructure, performance, and maintenance of electric cars, as well as the premium asking price. It looks like all this is about to be changed in 2022 as several manufacturers, including Tata, Renault, Mahindra, and Volvo, have lined up their respective electric cars for the Indian markets. These electric cars will cater to budget as well as premium segment buyers in the country.     1. Tata Tiago EV

    To target a wider audience, the prices of electric cars need to come down. That’s exactly what Tata is aiming for with its Tiago EV. This budget-oriented hatchback will offer a similar powertrain as the Tigor EV but may undercut it in terms of pricing, opening up more choices for the potential customer. The battery pack in the Tiago EV will reportedly provide a range of up to 310km on a single charge.

    The Tata Tiago EV will be a hatchback, with an automatic transmission and a five-seat capacity. Being a budget-oriented electric car, Tata Tiago EV is likely to miss out on fast charging support, which means the owners will have to reside with the normal charging speeds that could take around 7 to 8 hours for a full charge. Speaking of full charge, the Tiago EV is likely to last around 100 km with top speeds of 135 km/h.

    2. Renault Zoe

    The French car manufacturer will also hop onto the electric car bandwagon in India with its Zoe. This particular car is Renault’s one of the most successful electric vehicles in the European market, and thus, plans to release it in opportunistic markets like India. The Renault Zoe is said to offer a range of up to 390 kilometres on a single charge via its rumoured 52kWh battery pack.

    Renault is set to grab its share in the EV market in India through its Renault Zoe and will be positioning it as a semi-premium vehicle. The upcoming electric car in India will allegedly packed in a 52 kWh lithium-ion battery that could last for about 400km on a single run and can be quickly topped up to 80 percent in 65 minutes via the DC fast charger. The Zoe can accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in just 3.2 seconds, per reports.

    3. Mahindra eKUV 100

    Just like Tata, Mahindra also has big plans for its home market in terms of electric vehicles. The Indian automaker has a couple of launches lined up for the upcoming months including the eKUV 100, which was revealed during Auto Expo 2020. The eKUV 100 is similar to the combustion engine-powered KUV100, with slight exterior changes such as a closed front grill which is generally the norm on EVs. It will directly compete with the likes of Tata Tigor EV and even the upcoming Altroz EV.

    Mahindra eKUV 100 is the homegrown brand’s take on premium hatchback electric cars. It will feature a full-fledged touchscreen infotainment system that has various functions and options built into it such as a navigation system. The EV is likely to pack in a 15.9 kWh battery pack, which is said to provide a mileage of 100 km and fast charge in about an hour. The top speeds for this vehicle could be around 85 km per hour.

    Mahindra eKUV 100 being a budget-oriented car is expected to be priced at Rs 8 – 9 lakhs.

    4. Renault K ZE

    Renault KZE is yet another upcoming electric hatchback car targeted towards the high-end segment. The EV will draw power from a modest 26.8 kWh battery pack, which may offer a decent range. The design and style of the K ZE are vastly inspired by Renault’s own hatchback – Kwid.

    With a similar design to the petrol-run Renault Kwid, the K ZE is a car that caters to the semi-premium market of EVs. It will feature an 8-inch touchscreen that supports both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, which can come in handy for entertainment and navigational purposes. Apart from that, the K ZE has fast charging support with a claimed range of 271 km.

    5. Tata Altroz EV

    Tata is expected to launch 2022’s first electric car in the form of Altroz EV. The car was first shown to the world during the Geneva Motor show in 2019 but due to the ongoing pandemic and chip shortage disruptions, the India launch took a back seat. With the likes of Tata Nexon and Tigor, the Indian automaker definitely is all in for electric vehicles and will continue to expand its portfolio in the coming years. For now, the Altroz EV is Tata’s latest premium hatchback, which is said to deliver a range of around 250km on a single charge.

    The Tata Altroz EV will borrow many features from the already launched Nexon EV such as the same electric powertrain meaning the components used are very similar but with a different battery capacity. This electric hatchback could be charged from 0 percent to 80 percent in 60 minutes with its DC fast charging and can take around 8 hours to fully charge with a regular power socket. Interestingly, the car could also come with a mobile app called ‘ZConnect’ which lets you access the car’s stats such as the remaining battery, charging history and even locate the nearest charging stations for you.

    6. Tata Sierra

    At Auto Expo 2020, along with other EVs, Tata also showcased a concept of Sierra EV, which is based on the original SUV from 1991. The EV has been remodelled from top to bottom with tons of modern touches and technology to appeal to the new generation while keeping the iconic name and ergonomics such as the flat tailgate like the original Sierra. This concept car could soon become a reality with the launch expected to be somewhere around the latter half of the year in 2022.

    7. Mini Cooper SE

    Automobile players tend to rebadge their existing petrol run cars to electric cars and that’s no exception for MINI, which is said to bring its Cooper SE to India in 2022. The car has a modest 32.6kWh battery pack with a range of around 235-270 km.

    Apart from rocking the original design of Mini Cooper, the electric variant has a reported range of 235 to 270 km which draws power from a 50 kW battery. This battery tops up to 80 percent within 35 minutes when plugging it into a DC fast charger.

    8. Volvo XC40 Recharge

    The well established Swedish carmaker, Volvo is gearing up for its entry into the electric vehicle (EV) scene and that could all happen in 2022 itself for the Indian market. The Volvo XC40 Recharge is an SUV that is nothing but an electric version of the XC40 with electric motors and a battery pack, which on a single charge will reportedly let you drive for about 400km.

The SUV has storage options both on the trunk and the front hood making way to store large items such as luggage. Coming to the battery and charging speeds, the company claims that the XC40 Recharge can be juiced up to 80 percent with its fast-charging system and a little over 8 hours for a full charge via a power socket. The car can allegedly sprint its way to 100 km/h in mere 4.7 seconds.

    9. BMW i4

    After launching its first-ever electric car in India – iX in late 2021, BMW is soon expected to announce the i4. The BMW i4 will be an electric variant of the 4 Series Gran Coupe. This is a premium level high-end car with futuristic looks both on the interior as well as on the exterior. The upcoming electric car in India is also expected to be loaded with software features typically not found on more budget electric cars.

    10. Mercedes Benz EQS

    Mercedes is regarded as one of the most renowned brands of the car industry, and it’s not holding back from releasing EVs in the country. After being announced globally last year, Mercedes Benz EQS is a flagship tier car heading to India in 2022 with a whopping 107.1 kWh battery pack reportedly providing a range of 770 km. It’s safe to say, the Benz EQS will be amongst one of the most expensive, if not the most expensive, electric cars in India when it launches.

    Mercedes Benz EQS has several mind-boggling features such as automatic doors and rear-wheel steering to assist parking in tight spots. After all, the car is a statement of luxury packing on top of the line functions and specifications.
