Vivo has expanded its Y series of budget smartphones in its home market of China with the launch of the Y79. The phone is essentially the rebranded version of the Vivo V7+ (review), which was launched in India earlier this year. The Y79 comes with a more powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor, as compared to the Snapdragon 450-powered Vivo V7+. The rest of the Y79’s specifications are the same as the Vivo V7+.
The Vivo Y79 comes with a nearly bezel-less 5.99-inch display bearing a resolution of 1,440 x 720 pixels and an aspect ratio of 18:9. Apart from the FullView display, the phone’s other highlight is a 24-megapixel camera on the front with Moonlight selfie flash. At the rear, the handset is fitted with a 16-megapixel snapper that features an LED flash, phase detection autofocus and support for 64MB ultra HD images by merging four pictures into one.
As for the other specs, the Vivo Y79 is fuelled by a 2.0GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor, mated to 4GB of RAM. The storage capacity on board is 64GB, which can be further increased by inserting a microSD card. Software-wise, the device boots Android 7.1.1 Nougat based Funtouch OS, and gets a ‘Do Not Disturb’ mode for gaming, which prevents interruptions of calls and messages etc., when you are playing games. The connectivity features include 4G LTE, dual-SIM slots, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and A-GPS. A 3,225mAh battery keeps the whole package alive. The device features an all-metal unibody design with a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor.
The Vivo Y79 has been priced at RMB 2,498 (~Rs 24,400), and will be available in China on Vivo Mall, Vivo’s official stores, on TMall and JD.com starting November 11th. The device is being offered in four hues – black, rose gold, matte black and champagne gold. It is unlikely to go on sale outside China.
