WhatsApp has added four new text formatting options to the messaging app. WhatsApp users will now be able to make bulleted lists, numbered lists, block quotes, and inline codes. Before the new additions, WhatsApp was already offering Bold, Italic, Strikethrough, and Monospace formatting options on the app.

WhatsApp adds new text formatting options

  • The new WhatsApp text formatting options are available on Android, iOS, Web, and Mac so you can start using them right away.
  • You can now make bulleted lists on WhatsApp by typing the – symbol, followed by a space. The bullet points will appear immediately on your text box.
  • WhatsApp also lets you make numbered lists now. You can do this by typing 1 or 2 digits followed by a period and one space. So you basically just write 1. (space), and it will convert into a numbered list. 
  • Block quotes help highlight key text and make it more noticeable in messages. You can do this by typing the > symbol followed by a space.
  • The other feature is Inline Code that helps distinguish specific information
    within a sentence. To use this feature, you’ll have to wrap text with ` symbol. 


The new WhatsApp features are available for individual chats, and group chats as well. Channel admins can also start using the new WhatsApp text formatting options. These features will be helpful especially for coders who use WhatsApp as their primary mode of communication. 

WhatsApp now has eight text formatting options in total. The existing ones include bold that you can use by wrapping text in * symbol without space. Italic can be activated by typing _Message_. You can also add a strikethrough by typing ~Message~. Lastly, monospace can be added by typing “`Message“`.
