Xiaomi announces HyperOS: what is it, will your Redmi phone get it, and more

Xiaomi announced HyperOS with the Xiaomi 14 series. It is touted to have the smallest firmware size in the industry, measuring around 8.75GB. MIUI 14, in comparison, is about 13.09GB in size. So, the MIUI successor should be lighter and it also brings several new features. We have listed them below along with the list of supported devices. Xiaomi will start off the HyperOS rollout with higher-end phones and gradually replace MIUI in other devices, even from the Redmi branding.

What is HyperOS?

HyperOS is based on a combination of Linux and Xiaomi Vela, the company’s own IoT software platform. The revamped architecture makes the new Xiaomi OS more efficient. Xiaomi claims the new OS should work better across different devices, irrespective of the onboard RAM.

HyperOS features

HyperOS is a refinement of MIUI and so, the cosmetic differences aren’t a lot. The improvements are mostly under the hood and here are the key things new and improved on HyperOS:

1. Performance optimisations

Apps will boot faster and will be retained longer in the background memory. HyperOS also boasts its capability to bring about better disk latency and smoother animations.

2. AI enhancements

HyperOS offers AI-generated text through Xiaoai Input Assistant. It also lets you capture text on Photos, convert doodles into paintings, and search images using natural language.

3. Smart Connectivity

The connecting tissue between its various devices is dubbed Xiaomi HyperConnect and the smart UI is called Hypermind. Together they allow you to use your Xiaomi phone’s rear camera as a webcam, seamlessly share your mobile data with other devices, and receive important phone notifications on other bigger-screen devices.

4. Security

On one hand, Xiaomi says it’s opening up HyperConnect to 3rd party developers and welcomes the open-source community to Xiaomi Vela, it doubles down on encryption, permission management, and other security protocols.

5. UI changes

There are new lockscreen customisation options and some minor UI tweaks to the control centre and its stock apps. These were spotted on leaked screenshots of HyperOS.
