The Bengali family tale finds better scripts and more fertile ground in 2022. Alternative parenting styles, urban cohabitation, and non-traditional vocations were represented, while female-led stories received greater treatment. In a year that was exceptionally challenging for Bollywood, especially in the aftermath of OTT, Tollywood's efforts to convey better, nuanced tales were not ignored. Projapoti by Avijit Sinha isn't a family narrative per defined, but instead stakes on a personal tale—a strategy that has produced some of the most lauded theatrical films in Tollywood, like Shrimati and Boudir Canteen. One of the finest aspects of this film is the casting. As an aged father with the same fears as so many other older, lone dads, Mithun is inherently watchable. The actor has always been a natural performer; in addition to playing a larger-than-life Fatakeshto and winning cheers, he is also capable of conveying powerful emotional moments. Mithun would likely deserve the most of the credit if the movie does manage to draw in repeat viewers. The relationship between Dev and Mithun is also masterfully written to appeal to modern audiences. Although the film's length and script should have been cut in half, the last 30 minutes deliver a powerful emotional punch. The narration is greatly aided by and holds up to Rathijit's music. Projapoti is a strong choice for a family-friendly Christmas release in terms of character, plot, and viewing experience. Viewers wouldn't be doing themselves any favours by skipping this one, especially if they're fans of Mithun in the past.
