Highlights
  • Google Pixel 6 series is said to feature gimbal-like steady camera mode and a big Samsung sensor
  • The upcoming Google flagships to use custom NPU (neural processing unit) and ISP (image signal processor)
  • Pixel 6 series is expected to launch later this year

The upcoming Google Pixel 6 series, including the vanilla Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, flagships are rumoured to launch sometime later this year and are expected to arrive with the in-house Whitechapel chipset instead of Qualcomm or MediaTek processors. According to Twitter user @FrontTron, the Pixel 6 series will offer gimbal-like steady camera mode, a bigger Samsung sensor with Google’s custom NPU (neural processing unit) and ISP (image signal processor), and is claimed to bring big improvements to video recording. Though Pixel phones have always been the go-to recommendation for still photos, the video department lacked behind and has room for improvement when compared to the iPhones.

The Google Pixel 6 series wouldn’t be the first Android OEM to offer gimbal stabilisation, as LG and Vivo offered the same on their premium flagships such as the Vivo X60 series and LG Wing. This should allow the phone to record shake/ noise-free videos. Furthermore, the Google Pixel 6 series is said to use a big Samsung camera but the sensor details aren’t clear at the moment. It should be seen whether it will be a primary camera or one among the other camera lenses. Considering Google’s in-house Whitechapel SoC is being developed in partnership with Samsung, the sensor should offer better optimisation and fine-tuning. Google’s custom NPU and ISP on the Pixel 6 series are pegged to bring significant improvements in terms of picture and video quality compared to the Pixel 5.

Google Pixel 6 specifications

The recently leaked renders showed the Pixel 6 will get dual-rear cameras, a 6.4-inch FHD+ 120Hz display, and a 5,000mAh battery. The Pro model is said to come with a 6.67-inch QHD+ flat display with a 120Hz refresh rate and punch-hole cutout. The in-house Whitechapel chipset is said to be on similar lines as Snapdragon 870 and Google is tipped to rely on machine learning to match the performance with other chipsets. We should know more details about the Pixel series going forward.
