Instagram has launched a new feature that will let you download Reels from the app. So now you no longer have to rely on third-party apps or screen recording to download Reels from Instagram. This feature applies only to public accounts so anyone can download your reel but you also have the option to disable it.

Instagram head Adam Mosseri announced the new update through the app’s channel. It was first rolled out in the US earlier this year, and now the feature is rolling out globally to everyone else. This feature essentially lets you save Reels from public accounts to your camera roll. Any Reel you download will include a watermark with the creator’s Instagram handle.

How to download Instagram reels

It’s quite easy to download Instagram Reels with the new update. All you have to do is open the Reel you want to download, and tap the ‘Share’ icon with the paper airplane icon. Here, you’ll find the download option. Just tap on that and the reel will be saved to your camera roll.

If you have a public account, your Reels will be available to download by default. But you can choose to turn off downloads for your Reels. You can do this by going to Profile > Settings and privacy > Sharing and remixes > Downloading your reels. Here, toggle off the download button.

The feature has just started rolling out so it might take some time before it reaches your account. You can check by updating the Instagram app from the Play Store and App Store.

Instagram recently rolled out the ability to share feed posts and Reels only to your Close Friends list. This was earlier limited only to Stories but now you can choose to keep some of your feed posts and Reels private.
