No, Game of Thrones and other HBO shows are not censored on JioCinema

Highlights
  • JioCinema recently introduced its Premium-tier plan in India.
  • The plan costs Rs 999 a year, and offers the subscribers with shows like Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon, Succession, and more.
  • Amid the ongoing chaos surrounding JioCinema Premium censoring these shows, here’s the truth.

JioCinema Premium subscription recently went live in India. The OTT platform, which has attracted a lot of viewers owing to its free streaming of the FIFA World Cup 2023 and the IPL, has now added a JioCinema Premium subscription on top of the free content it is already offering. The likes of HBO shows, such as The Last of Us, House of the Dragon, Game of Thrones, and Succession can now be streamed on the platform, if one pays Rs 999 a year. That said, ever since the plan was unveiled, rumours surrounding JioCinema censoring some shows in the country started popping up on various social media platforms, such as Twitter. Is JioCinema Premium showing you censored content or not? Well, let’s find out.

Is JioCinema Premium censoring shows?

Several people took to Twitter and claimed that JioCinema Premium was streaming censored versions of the said shows. This led many to think twice before opting for the subscription, as censoring the shows could potentially deprive them of enjoying the respective storyline completely. Plus, censoring a show more or less hinders the actual narrative atimes, and even though it might seem to be a required thing to do, there is an audience which does not want to watch censored content.

Take this tweet for instance. This Twitter user mocked JioCinema for providing a “2013 Star World level censorship”, but the same person later admitted his mistake and corrected his initial claim.

Turns out, there is no such censorship happening (at least till date) on the platform, and you can watch all the shows in their original form. We independently checked and can confirm the same for a couple of shows at least.

No 4K on JioCinema yet, shows missing

That said, here are some more observations from our side. Even though the shows are not censored, the streaming quality is capped to Full HD for now, and there appears to be some issues with the streaming support on different screens. For instance, our 4K TV, while streaming shows like Game of Thrones, failed to provide us with an optimum video quality, as dark environments appear more or less faded, and there are clear pixels noticed during such scenes.

Additionally, a few titles including popular ones like Sex and the City, The Wire, The Sopranos, and a few more are yet to be made available on JioCinema. However, it’s too soon to say that these shows may not make it to the platform at all, since JioCinema is adding titles on a daily basis and notifying users. It may take some time, or not make it at all – there’s yet to be a clarification on the same.

Plus, navigating through JioCinema is still how it used to be pre-premium times. Once you subscribe to JioCinema Premium, you have to manually search for the content that you have paid for, and even though this does not appear to be much of a problem, as a potential subscriber would ideally be aware of the content they are going to be offered with, but a dedicated tab/page for the Premium-only shows would have made way more sense and would have been way more convenient for the subscribers. This, however, is not the end of the world, as the platform might improve the UI sometime in the near future (at least we hope it does).

Long story short, JioCinema Premium is certainly not censoring any show, at least for now, and you can watch all the premium offerings in their original form without any hassle, if you subscribe for the plan.
