Apple was the first brand to ship phones without a charger

Nokia, however, isn’t the first brand to take this decision. The credit for that goes to Apple. Last year, the Cupertino-based tech giant launched the iPhone 12 series smartphones. Along with it, the brand announced that its phones will no more come bundled with a charging adapter. According to the iPhone maker, skipping on a charger will reduce carbon emissions significantly. Samsung has taken a similar decision with its flagship smartphones. The Galaxy S21 series does not ship with a charger in the box. Even the recently launched Mi 11 doesn’t include a wall charger. And now, Nokia has jumped the bandwagon as well.

Nokia wants to reduce ecological impact by skipping on a charger

“There’s no plastic wall charger included, and with the 100% compostable case, we’ve reduced the ecological impact of Nokia X20,” reads the sustainability section on the official webpage of the Nokia X20. Currently, there is no information if the decision from the brand to ship the Nokia X20 without a charger is limited to specific regions or for all the markets where the device will be sold. What we also don’t know at the moment is if the Nokia X20 is the only device to ship without a charger or if the brand is going to take a similar decision for its other smartphones.

The decision from HMD Global might affect Nokia X20 sales

The smartphones from Apple, Samsung, and Mi, which do not ship with a charger, are high-end devices. These brands can justify their action of skipping the charger by saying that the people buying a high-end phone will have money to spend on a charging adapter. The same might not be true for HMD Global. The Nokia X20, however, is a low-end/mid-range smartphone. Arguably, people buying a smartphone in that price bracket might not want to spend additional money on purchasing a charger separately. Many people might prefer other phones over the Nokia X20 if it indeed ships without a charger when it goes on sale.
