OPPO will not include charger with some phones starting next year: company releases statement

Highlights
  • OPPO confirms to not include charging adapters with some phones starting next year.
  • The company will take out the charger from the box and put it for sale separately so users can continue to use it even after they upgrade the phone.
  • OPPO hasn’t mentioned which segment will not get the charging adapter in the box first.

At the launch event for the OPPO Reno8 series Billy Zhang, OPPO’s VP of overseas sales and services said that next year the company will not include chargers in the retail packages of ‘several products.’ However, the top executive hasn’t mentioned which devices will not get the charging adapters in the box. OPPO becomes the only brand after Apple and Samsung globally to remove the charger in the box. We can expect other brands to slowly follow the same route in the future.

VOOC is OPPO’s proprietary charging solution and they introduce new fast charging solutions every now and then and it requires new charging adapters to take advantage of the speeds. So it remains to be seen whether the elimination of chargers will be limited to entry-level and mid-range phones or even extend to flagships.

OPPO charger in the box

OPPO mentioned that it will remove the charger in the box of several products starting next year. The company’s executives haven’t mentioned which segment of phones will not have the charging adapters in the box.

In a statement, the company said “We will take the charger out of the box in the next year for several products. We have a plan. It’s not that easy for consumers to get access to [SuperVOOC chargers], so we have to keep it in the box. However, as we are expanding our business operations, we are looking to take chargers out of the box and put them in the store so that our users are able to buy the chargers and continue using them even when they upgrade their devices.”

This is big news coming from OPPO considering the brand has always talked big about its fast charging solution and how it is always faster than Samsung Apple, which traditionally offered a maximum speed of 45W or 20W speeds.

The recently launched Reno 8 and Reno 8 Pro support 80W SuperVOOC and this should be enough to power the phones in the near future. OPPO phones do support USB Power Delivery, although at a lower power level than the VOOC implementation, so users can use many third-party charging adapters that are available on the market.
