OPPO Reno 5 likely to succeed Reno 3 series, could launch in May

OPPO Reno 5 is the likely successor to the Reno 3 series, according to a new tip on Chinese micro-blogging site Weibo. According to tipster Digital Chat Station, the OPPO Reno 5 launch event could happen in May. If you're wondering why the company isn't naming the series Reno 4, it is because the number '4' is considered bad luck in Chinese tradition, which is why OPPO will likely be skipping the Reno 4 naming altogether. Not a lot is known about the OPPO Reno 5 specifications at the moment, but we expect to see some 2020 features like a high refresh rate display and possibly 5G support. So the mid-range smartphone could come equipped with a Snapdragon 765 5G SoC or the MediaTek Dimensity chipset. But these are just speculations at the moment and should be taken with a pinch of salt.

Before OPPO launches the Reno 5 series, the company is expected to announce the Reno Ace 2. It is still unclear whether the phone will be part of the Reno series or launch simply as the OPPO Ace 2, but the phone is real as it recently passed through the TENAA certification site. It revealed that the phones will have a punch-hole display and a quad camera setup.

Coming to the OPPO Reno 3, the smartphone was launched in China last year alongside the Reno 3 Pro. The phones touted a 90Hz refresh rate, quad rear cameras, and a 4,025mAh battery with VOOC 4.0 30W fast charging. The vanilla Reno 3 is powered by MediaTek's latest Dimensity 1000L 5G SoC and sports a 6.4-inch Full-HD+ AMOLED screen, while the OPPO Reno 3 Pro rocks Qualcomm Snapdragon 765 5G SoC and a 6.5-inch OLED punch-hole display with 90Hz refresh rate.

The OPPO Reno 3 Pro, however, debuted in India as a 4G-only model that ships with MediaTek Helio P95 SoC. The Indian variant is the world's first smartphone with 44MP dual selfie cameras. It ships with a 6.4-inch full-HD+ AMOLED display with a dual-punch hole design that houses 44MP primary sensor and 2MP depth sensor for portrait shots. The rear cameras of the phone packs quad rear cameras with 64MP (F/1.8) primary sensor that can produce 108MP images through software interpolation, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens, a 13MP (F/2.4) telephoto lens with 20x digital zoom and a 2MP mono lens. A 4,025mAh battery with VOOC 4.0 30W fast-charging support fuels the handset, while Android 10-based ColorOS 7 takes care of its software side of things.

The OPPO Reno 3 global variant is also different from its Chinese counterpart. The handset MediaTek Helio P90 chipset as opposed to the 5G MediaTek Dimensity 1000 SoC and an upgraded 44MP selfie shooter instead of 32MP. The quad rear cameras of the phone, meanwhile, has been downgraded to 48MP primary sensor from 64MP. The OPPO Reno 3 is yet to make its debut in India.
