Redmi flagship with Snapdragon 855 will not have pop-up selfie shooter, confirms Xiaomi VP

“Lu Weibing, the vice president and head of Redmi brand, clarified that the Redmi flagship with Snapdragon 855 will not have a pop-up selfie camera”

Xiaomi’s standalone brand Redmi confirmed to launch a flagship device powered by Snapdragon 855 this year and phone is widely rumoured to be called Redmi Pro 2. Last week, a new render posted on Weibo gave us our first look at the handset, revealing pop-up selfie camera and triple rear camera setup. Another live image of an alleged Redmi phone then surfaced the internet a couple of days back. While it is not confirmed to be the Redmi Pro 2 in question, it is said to be powered by the same Snapdragon 855 and can be seen having a centred pop-up selfie camera, contradicting the earlier leak. This leak was especially interesting as Redmi, or even Xiaomi, has never used the pop-up selfie mechanism in a phone before.

Redmi Flagship

Responding to a user’s question on WeiboLu Weibing, the vice president and head of Redmi brand, clarified that their Snapdragon 855 powered flagship will not have a pop-up selfie camera. This, after several leaks over the past week, comes as a surprise and makes us question the authenticity of the details we know so far. The upcoming Redmi flagship could have a waterdrop notch to accommodate the selfie shooter on the front. Earlier leaks suggest the Redmi Pro 2 might pack a 48MP primary camera and a second depth sensor for portrait shots. However, that’s all there is to know about the Redmi flagship at the moment.

The first Redmi Pro smartphone, released in 2016, features a dual-rear camera setup, which was a first for Redmi handsets at the time. With Lu Weibing clarifying that it is too soon to be talking about the Redmi flagship, we will have to wait for the brand to make an official announcement in the coming days. Stay tuned for more updates.
