WhatsApp now lets you send HD quality videos: here’s how to do it

Highlights
  • WhatsApp has rolled out a new feature that lets you send HD quality videos.
  • Similar to HD photos, this one too sets the quality of videos to HD resolution.
  • Up until now, videos were sent in SD (480p) resolution.

WhatsApp recently rolled out the ability to send HD quality photos on the app. It also said that support for HD videos will be available soon. You can now start sending HD videos on WhatsApp as the new feature has been added to the app. Prior to this, videos would be compressed and sent in SD (Standard Definition) quality to save on time and storage.

WhatsApp HD videos rollout

  • HD videos on WhatsApp have started rolling out to everyone on Android and iOS.
  • If you have received it though you will see the ‘HD’ option before sending a video on WhatsApp.
  • You can tap on the icon to set the video quality to HD. By default the video quality will be SD, which is 480p.
  • If you choose HD, then the video resolution will be 720p.
  • WhatsApp also shows you the size difference between SD and HD videos.

Do note that this isn’t the original resolution of the video but a higher one than what’s been available so far. But this will still be close to the original quality so you will get a much better video. Also, this feature is available only for videos that can be sent in HD. Videos that are already compressed will not be sent in HD as the quality has already been shrunk.

The recipient is also notified of HD videos with a watermark at the bottom-left corner. Users also have the option to download the videos in HD or not by tapping on the icon below. Since HD videos will be larger in size, it makes sense for users have the option. It’s also helpful in situations with low internet connectivity.

Since WhatsApp has just started rolling out HD videos to users, the feature might take some time to reach everyone. If you haven’t received it yet you can try updating the app on your phone.
