WhatsApp to allow sharing of 100 media files at once; voice status, private audience coming to Status

Highlights
  • WhatsApp will allow sharing of 100 media files in the media picker within the app.
  • WhatsApp has announced new Status feature updates.
  • WhatsApp Status gets Private Audience, Voice Status, Link previews, and Status Profile rings.

WhatsApp is reportedly working on bringing the ability to allow users to share as many as 100 media files in one go. In its current state, WhatsApp only allows 30 files. The new development has been spotted by noted tracker WABetaInfo in WhatsApp beta for the Android 2.24.4.3 release. Select beta testers have already received the new feature, according to WABetaInfo. To check whether the feature is enabled, customers just have to attempt to select more than 30 files in the media picker within the app.

If you are able to select more than 30 files, the feature is enabled for you. If it’s not enabled, WhatsApp users need to wait for future updates as there’s no other way around it. This is a long overdue feature that most WhatsApp users would want.

The limitation with 100 media file sharing is that users can’t select the same photo or video multiple times. Since the feature already made it to the beta testing phase, we can expect it to be rolled out to the general public in the coming days but an exact timeline can’t be confirmed just yet.

WhatsApp status updates

WhatsApp has announced some new features for Status Updates, which will allow users to share ephemeral updates with contacts on the chat platform.

Private Audience: Firstly, there is the Private Audience Selector, which as the name suggests allows users to choose who sees their status updates. While this isn’t an entirely new feature, the implementation offers a more customised experience going forward. The most recent audience selection is saved and will be used as the default for the next update.

Voice Status: Next, we have the Voice Status feature which allows users to share voice notes of up to 30 seconds via their Status. WhatsApp says that this is a way of sending more personal updates.

Status Reactions: This will allow users to react to status updates by simply swiping up and tapping one of the eight emojis. This is the same as Instagram implementation.

Status Profile Rings: This will make it easier to see status updates within chat lists, group participants lists, and contact info. There will be a ring around the user’s profile picture whenever there is a status update.

Link previews: Lastly, we have Link Previews on Status. This means that whenever a user posts a link, a visual preview of the link’s content is available. This is aimed at offering contacts a better idea of what the link is about before they open. WhatsApp says that these updates have started rolling out to all users globally and will be available to everyone in the next few weeks.
