Consumer electronics upstart Nothing, started by OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei, is set to launch its second smartphone soon, probably in July. The company has itself confirmed a number of details of the smartphone, including teasing the presence of a larger battery pack in the Nothing Phone (2), the use of Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC by Qualcomm, and that the devices will be made in India. As the launch nears, a tech publication in association with noted tipster OnLeaks posted in-testing device renders of the Nothing Phone (2).

Carl Pei refutes leaked renders

Shortly after the renders were posted online yesterday on June 5th, Carl Pei posted a brief tweet with just one word in it — “Fake”.

While Pei did not explicitly point out the leaked renders in his tweet, it is reportedly implied that this is what the top executive referred to. The renders posted by OnLeaks and SmartPrix claimed that the overall design of the Nothing Phone (2) will remain more or less the same as Phone (1) — showcasing the Glyph interface and transparent rear panel. However, the leaks claimed that Phone (2) will feature redesigned lights, a more curved rear panel to improve in-hand grip, and add more details and tweaks to the Glyph interface on the back.

It’s important to note that the renders posted were already said to be from a testing phase of the product, which suggests that design details of the phone may have changed since them. However, major design changes are seldom done in a product’s testing stage, which leaves details of this matter to be seen only closer to the launch date. Pei has also not alluded to any specific way in which the said renders may be “fake”, which somewhat suggests that even in case of design changes, the alterations may not be major.
