Former OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei’s newest startup Nothing has stayed true to its name and produced nothing of consequence until now. However, the company teased a pair of TWS earbuds earlier but neglected to mention anything in the way of a launch date. Today, the company gave us some more information about its first pair of TWS earbuds. They will be called the Ear 1 and will hit shelves sometime in June 2021. Little is known about the Nothing Ear 1, other than the fact that it…exists. We can only hope that Carl Pei teases the Nothing Ear 1 some more in the coming weeks.

Nothing Ear 1 details

Nothing is still being discreet about the upcoming TWS earbuds. In a blog post, the company said, “Design is still top secret but what we can tell you is that Ear 1 combines notes of transparency, iconic form, and refined functionality. It is the starting point that will define the artistry, confidence, and craftsmanship that will carry our products and services for years to come.”

A concept render from earlier told us that the Nothing Ear 1 would be transparent in design. It also appeared to be shorter than most TWS earbuds, but it’s hard to infer that without any other point of reference. It is hard to tell how much the earbuds will cost, but given that Nothing is a fairly new entrant into the already oversaturated TWS earbuds market, we can expect some OnePlus levels of market disruption. In all likelihood, we’re probably looking at a pair of high-end earbuds packed with exciting features such as Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), aptX, low-latency mode, and more.

It is likely that Nothing will follow OnePlus’ path as a market disruptor, given that Carl Pei is at the helm. The whole Carl Pei-backed schtick will only work for so long before consumers move on to better, well-established brands. Therefore, it is critical for Nothing to get its first few products right, otherwise, it runs the risk of fading into obscurity.
