Top tech news this week: Xiaomi 14 series launched, Apple ‘Scary fast’ event, and more

This week in tech, Qualcomm launched its latest flagship chipset for upcoming Android smartphones. Soon we’ll be seeing several flagship phones launching with the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC. Xiaomi already took the top spot with the Xiaomi 14 series being the first to be powered by this chipset. Apple also announced the date for its ‘Scary fast’ event where we’re expecting new Macs. In India, Jio demonstrated the first-satellite-based fiber service. OnePlus also started selling its first foldable in the country.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset

Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is the latest flagship chipset for smartphones. The chipset is based on a 4nm process and the CPU with a peak clock speed of 3.3GHz. Qualcomm says it’s 30 per cent more powerful than its predecessor, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. It is also 20 per cent more efficient. The GPU on the other hand provides 25 per cent better performance, 25 per cent better power efficiency, and 40 per cent better Ray Tracing with up to 10 per cent overall power savings.

Apple ‘Scary fast’ event

Apple has announced a ‘Scary fast’ event for October 30th. It is scheduled to take place at 5 pm PT, which would be 5:30 am IST on October 31st. There are rumours about a new iMac and, even new MacBook Pros at the Apple event. Apple is expected to launch a new 24-inch iMac and an updated MacBook Pro lineup with 14-inch and 16-inch models.

Xiaomi 14 series debuts in China

Xiaomi’s latest flagship series is official with the Xiaomi 14 and Xiaomi 14 Pro. These are also the first phones to launch with the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset. The Xiaomi 14 series comes with AMOLED 120Hz displays, up to 16GB RAM and 1TB storage, 50MP Leica-branded rear cameras and more.

JioSpaceFiber launched in India

‘JioSpaceFiber’ is the first satellite-based giga fiber service launched in India. It provides satellite-based internet connectivity at fiber-like speeds. The new Jio service is aimed at reaching rural and remote areas with poor or no internet connectivity. JioSpaceFiber is already available in four of the remotest locations in India including Gir in Gujarat, Korba in Chattisgarh, Nabrangpur in Odissa, and ONGC Jorhat in Assam.

OnePlus Open first sale in India

OnePlus Open, the company’s first foldable went on sale in India. It’s priced at Rs 1,39,999 for the single 16GB + 512GB variant. The foldable phone can be purchased from the OnePlus India website, Amazon, and other major outlets. It comes in two colour options: Voyager Black and Emerald Dusk.
