Apple may launch low-cost MacBooks next year to boost shipments: Kuo

Low-cost MacBooks on the way

• According to Kuo, Apple has been facing a decline in MacBook shipments this year due to the limited availability of the M2 chip. Kuo suggests that Apple could go ahead and launch M3-powered MacBooks despite low volume production instead of continuing to sell the M2 models. This would be one way to boost MacBook shipments, and if this doesn't work either then it might increase the likelihood of launching a redesigned MacBook Pro in 2025.
• This is where Apple's plans of affordable MacBooks come in line as it could be another way to boost shipments. Kuo says with a low-cost lineup of MacBooks, Apple might be targeting around 8 to 10 million units per year. There's no confirmation though, and this is something that Apple "may consider."
• Apple's low-cost MacBooks will reportedly be different from the current lineup as it will be made with "different materials." These MacBooks will still come with a metal casing but the components used in the hardware will be comparatively cheaper than what's used for the current MacBooks.
• Apple plans to compete with Google's Chromebooks with its affordable MacBooks. Chromebooks are particularly popular with students. While Google offers its own Chromebooks with the Pixelbook series, it also partners with other OEMs including Asus, Dell, HP and Lenovo.

Apple plans to launch the low-cost MacBooks sometime around the second half of 2024. We still have time for that but we might see new Macs on October 31st at Apple's 'Scary Fast' event. Apple is rumoured to launch a new iMac, and even new MacBook Pros.
