Link your Aadhaar card with PAN today to avoid a penalty of up to Rs 1,000.
PAN Aadhaar linking is mandatory for filing your Income Tax returns, opening an instant bank account online, and authenticating tax filings, among other things. If you haven't done it yet, your PAN card must have become invalid. Now when you try to link the two, you'll have to pay a penalty charge. Still, to make the process easier for you, we have created this guide on how to link your Aadhaar Card and PAN Card online, along with fees and other details.
Step 1: Got to https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/
Step 2: Click on Link Aadhaar.
Step 3: Enter PAN Card and Aadhaar Card numbers in their respective fields and click on Validate
Step 4: Pay the penalty for linking the Aadhaar Card and PAN Card late. Click on Continue to pay through E-Pay Tax button
Step 5: Enter the PAN number and repeat the PAN number in the other box. Then fill in your mobile number and press on Continue.
Step 6: Enter the OTP that you receive.
Step 7: Once you see the "Successfully verified" message, Click on Continue.
Step 8: Click on the Income Tax option in the E-Tax Pay menu
Step 9: Select the latest Assessment Year, choose Other Receipts from the Type of Payment options list, and in the sub-type of payment options, choose Fee for the delay in linking PAN with Aadhaar.
Step 10: Press Continue on the next screen.
Step 11: Choose the mode of payment. For UPI, click on Payment Gateway and then select any of the banks listed. You need not have an account in the bank to use its gateway.
Step 12: Agree to the terms and conditions and click on Submit to the bank option at the bottom.
Step 13: Now pay using your preferred mode of payment. Once paid, you'll see a message on the screen which says, "The Challan Payment is Successful". Download this receipt and note down the BSR code somewhere safe. This will be required for checking the status of the linkage.
For this to work, you'll have to be registered at https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/ Do it, if you aren't registered. Once you are, follow these steps:
Step 1: Enter the User ID on this page.
Step 2: Tick the Please confirm your secure access message and enter your Password. Hit Continue once done.
Step 3: Click on the Link Aadhaar option.
Step 4: Fill in the Aadhaar Card number and click on the Validate button.
You'll see a message on the screen saying, "Your Aadhaar-PAN linking request has been sent to UIDAI for validation".
Additionally, you can also link your PAN and your Aadhaar card from the comfort of your home through SMS.
Just send the following message to 567678 or 56161: UIDPAN<SPACE><12 digit Aadhaar><SPACE><10 digit PAN>. Send the message using the registered mobile number.
Yes, you have to pay Rs 1,000 as a fee for linking the PAN and the Aadhaar Card.
Yes, it is compulsory for all PAN Cardholders (except those who fall under the exempt category) to link their Aadhaar Card and PAN Card. Otherwise, your PAN Card will become inoperative. Additionally, you may face a higher penalty for non-compliance and pay higher TDS or TCS.

In case of a minor mismatch between your details like the name on both documents, you'll be able to proceed with the linking by entering an OTP you receive on your registered mobile phone number.
However, if it doesn't let you (i.e., you get an authentication failed message), you'll have to update the details on one of these cards to match it with the other.
The deadline to do this for free was March 30th, 2023. Now you'll have to pay the penalty fee of Rs 1,000 to do the same.
