Instagram Friend Map feature

  • Instagram is currently testing ‘Friend Map’ where you’ll see all your friends on a world map. It was spotted by leaker Alessandro Paluzzi who regularly shares upcoming Instagram features.
  • The basic idea about Friend Map is that you’ll get to see the location of your friends on Instagram. This feature is optional though, and you can choose which friends to share your location with on the Friend Map.
  • Instagram says that your location is end-to-end encrypted, and your location will only update when you open the app. There’s also a Ghost mode that hides your last active location.
  • Instagram’s Friend Map will let you add notes that will appear along with your location on the map. Also, anything shared with the location tag will appear on the map.

Instagram’s new feature seems quite similar to Snap Map. On Snapchat too, you can see the location of your friends on the map. The location is displayed with your Bitmoji, and while you don’t get coordinates you can still get a fair idea of where exactly they are. Snap Map is located as the first option on the menu below.

As for Instagram, there’s no word on when this feature will roll out, and if it will become official. But the brand has been quite experimental with different features so we might just see Friend Map launch on Instagram soon.
