According to a report by TOI, Prem Raj Singh, a 47-year-old real estate businessman from Aligarh said his phone caught fire while it was inside his pocket. He first felt the phone getting hot, and then smoke started coming out of it, the report added. Due to this, Singh suffered burn injuries on his left thigh and thumb for which, he was taken to a hospital.
"I took it out of my pocket and it ignited with a loud sound following which it broke into two pieces," TOI quoted him as saying. There was no external play here like the phone possibly plugged into a charger or the phone heating up due to prolonged use.
According to a report by ETV Bharat, Singh said that the smartphone in question is an Apple iPhone. The model hasn't been specified, but based on the image shared it looks like the older iPhone 8 or iPhone 7. Singh added that he's been using iPhones for over a decade but after this incident he's lost faith in the company. The phone also ended up breaking into two, with the front and back panel getting separated from each other. The image shows that the iPhone has been completely burnt.
Singh even went on to file a complaint against the brand at Mahua Khera police station. Investigation is currently undergoing, and action will be taken accordingly, the report added. The real cause behind this hasn't been revealed yet. But based on past incidents, smartphones usually ignite due to faulty batteries or even short circuits.
The last similar smartphone incident involving an iPhone was reported in 2021, wherein a Melbourne-based man claimed his iPhone X caused second-degree burns to him.
