Qualcomm Technologies has announced an all-new ‘Snapdragon X series’ naming architecture for its platform to align with the next generation of PC experiences. The company says that 2024 will be an inflection point for the PC industry and, the Snapdragon X compute platform will “deliver next-level performance, AI, connectivity, and battery life.” To recall, back in 2018, the chip-maker introduced the Snapdragon 8cx chipset meant for Windows on ARM devices.
Qualcomm Snapdragon X series’ naming architecture
Qualcomm says that it announced a new Snapdragon X series naming architecture following extensive analysis, consumer research, ideation, and feedback from the PC ecosystem. “We’ve landed on this new naming convention and new visual design system built upon the insights we collected.“
The New X identifier distinguishes PC platforms from other Snapdragon product categories. New logos and platform badges are said to bring the Snapdragon X-series to life visually.
As for modems, Qualcomm says they are named Snapdragon X too. Say like the Snapdragon X75 and X72. The company is promising a “clear, simplified tiering structure, which will help users navigate our platform capabilities from mainstream to premium.” This has been a common complaint for PC processors, mobile chipsets, and GPUs alike.
The rebranding appears to be a preparation for the launch of the new Oryon-based chipsets. This will also mark a break between Snapdragon chips using only ARM-designed CPU cores and Snapdragon SoCs with Qualcomm’s in-house core. This is for the Windows on the ARM branch of the family.
