[Exclusive] Redmi 8 series launching in China on October 1st; one model will have 48MP camera

“Redmi 8 and 8A specifications have been leaked in the past, and it could be the Redmi 8 Pro that gets the 48MP sensor”

The Redmi 8 series will launch on October 1st at an event in Beijing, a leaked teaser poster shared exclusively by a trusted source has revealed. The poster shows at least one of the phones launching on the October 1st event, likely the Redmi 8 Pro, will have a 48MP rear camera. Our source mentions that the handsets unveiled at the event will include the Redmi 8 and 8A. However, since neither of them has been reported to feature a 48MP primary sensor, we could also see the Redmi 8 Pro go official on the October 1st launch event.

Images and specifications of the Redmi 8A smartphone were revealed just yesterday in China thanks to a TENAA listing. The smartphone will feature a 6.2-inch HD+ display with waterdrop notch, MIUI 9 custom skin based on Android 9, and an octa-core processor with 2GHz clock speed. It is listed in 2GB, 3GB, and 4GB RAM variants and with 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB storage options, with 512GB microSD card support. It will have a 12MP sensor on the back and an 8MP camera in front. Battery capacity of the smartphone is listed as 5,000mAh and colour options are Black, Blue, Red, White, Green, Purple, Pink, and Grey.

As for the Redmi 8, a leaked live photo of an upcoming Redmi phone with dual rear cameras was leaked last month. At the time, it was thought to be the Redmi 8A, but with the recent TENAA listing showing a single rear camera, a more probable candidate would be the Redmi 8. The leaked live images showed the smartphone will have a waterdrop notch, a thick chin, and dual rear cameras in vertical alignment. Specifications listed on the Settings page of the handset include 2GHz octa-core Snapdragon 439 SoC, MIUI 9.7.11 software version based on Android 9 Pie, 4GB RAM, and 64GB storage.

Redmi 8 Pro has been largely out of the rumour mill — it would be a surprise if the company actually launches it considering the Redmi 7 Pro wasn’t launched when the brand unveiled the 7 series. Nonetheless, if a 48MP camera phone indeed gets launched on October 1st as part of the 8 series, it will likely be the Redmi 8 Pro. Till then, we will have to wait for the official launch to find out what the brand has in the pipeline for us.
