Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 and Redmi 4 were the top-selling smartphones in 2017: Counterpoint

Recently, Q4 2017 reports from market research firms Canalys and Counterpoint revealed that the South Korean tech giant – Samsung has managed to lose its top spot to the JioPhone (first impressions) in the feature phone segment and to Xiaomi in the smartphone market. Samsung did maintain that it still is the reigning brand when it comes to actual devices sold, on the basis of data by GfK, which forecasts consumer purchases and not manufacturer shipments.

However, Counterpoint has now released the list of 10 top selling smartphones in the year 2017 and the top two spots belong to Xiaomi. As for the smartphones that made it to the list, Samsung has the highest number with four device, Xiaomi has three including the top two, Vivo has two and OPPO has one. It comes as no surprise that Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 (review) and Redmi 4 (review) are the highest selling smartphones with the first and second spot, respectively. Both these smartphones were also the fastest selling for Xiaomi with over 2,50,000 units of the Redmi 4 sold in first online sale. Xiaomi's Redmi 4A (review) bagged the fifth spot on the list.

For Samsung, Galaxy J2 is in the third spot with Galaxy J7 NXT, Galaxy J7 Prime and Galaxy J2 2016 (review) on the sixth, seventh and eighth positions, respectively. The OPPO A37 surprisingly made it to the fourth spot on the list, mainly owing to its offline-exclusive availability in India. The last two spots are occupied by Vivo's Y55L (first impressions) and Y53, both of which are budget offerings from the brand.

The common denominators for all these handsets happen to be affordable price tags and offline availability.
