Hrishikesh Mukherjee wanted newcomers for the parts played by Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan. But when they heard Hrishikesh was making the film, they insisted they be cast in the film and did not charge any money. Mukherjee kept insisting the roles were too small for them. But Amitabh and Jaya accepted it as a good will measure.
