Samsung aims to sell as many foldable devices in 2021 as it would have sold Galaxy Note smartphones.
While the publication didn't mention many details about the double-folding smartphone, its goal apparently is to offer an aspect ratio of 16:9 or 18:9 when fully unfolded to avoid scaling issues, something that the Galaxy Z Fold 2 suffers from. While the design of this double-folding device has not been finalized yet, it is said to have an app-friendly form factor.
Coming to the upcoming Galaxy Z Flip, it might be dubbed as the Galaxy Z Flip 2 or the Galaxy Z Flip 3 (since the Galaxy Z Flip 5G is considered a second-generation Galaxy Z Flip). The new Galaxy Z Flip is said to come in 4G and 5G versions. Reports suggest that Samsung will position the new Z Flip as a budget flagship. As for the Galaxy Fold 3, its details are scarce at the moment.
The Korean tech giant has patented a few designs of double-folding smartphones so far. One of the patents that surfaced in 2018 had two small panels on each side that could fold out. A speculated utility of this design was that one of the foldable panels could be used a keyboard while the remaining screen estate can show the content, to improve productivity. Whatever the final design might be, these are surely interesting times for the foldable industry.
