WhatsApp has started testing a new feature that will make it easier to search old messages. It’s a new tool that lets you search messages by date. So you can now pick dates, and search for messages accordingly. The new feature is in testing, and for the WhatsApp Web version only. It’s expected to roll out for mobile apps as well.

Search WhatsApp messages by date

  • The new feature is available in the WhatsApp Web Beta 2.2348.50 version, as confirmed by WABetaInfo. It’s currently available to select beta testers but it should roll out to more soon.
  • The way this feature works is self-explanatory but you’re essentially getting a useful tool to look through old messages.
  • As seen in the screenshot shared by WABetaInfo, there’s a new calendar button that appears when you open the search tool for messages. When you tap on that, you get a calendar with a date picker panel.
  • You can choose the specific date, month and year from here to look for messages that may have been exchanged during that particular time. WhatsApp will then pull up messages and display them in the chat.

It’s worth noting that this feature is in testing so it won’t be available to everyone. If you’re part of the WhatsApp Web beta programme you can check to see if you’ve received the feature or not. As for others who are interested, you can enroll in the WhatsApp beta programme.

WhatsApp regularly tests features that beta testers can try out before they’re released for everyone. It’s been working on features such as email address verification as an alternative method to access your WhatsApp account, alternate profile and more. It’s also testing the ability to send hear-once voice messages, similar to how you send view once photos and videos.
