Google Pixel 3A and Pixel 3A XL will be compatible with Android 12L

Highlights
  • Google recently announced its Android 12L OS, which will be tailored for large screen devices like tablets, foldables, and ChromeOS devices.
  • Android 12L will also act as an incremental upgrade for smartphones running on Android 12.
  • Google has recently updated the list of Pixel smartphones, which are slated to receive Android 12L beta update and the Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL have also made the cut.

Not too long ago, Google announced Android 12L, an OS designed specifically for devices with large screens – tablets, foldable smartphones, rollable smartphones, and ChromeOS-powered devices – to say the least. While it will be specifically “tailored” for such devices, Android 12L will also act as an incremental update for devices which will be compatible with and/or will be running Android 12 OS. The official Android 12L page, which was made live a little while ago, has now been updated and a couple of devices on the verge of their update cycles have made it to the list. Turns out the Google Pixel 3a and Google Pixel 3a XL will be available for Android 12L beta. Let’s take a look.

Google Pixel 3a and 3a XL will be eligible for Android 12

Android 12L

As seen in the image above, the page which has listed the eligible Pixel smartphones for Android 12L has now been updated and the Pixel 3a series of smartphones have now been added. To recall, both these smartphones have reached the end of their respective product support cycles, meaning that they are no longer going to receive regular updates. The last security patch these two smartphones are set to receive will be in May, 2022.

Thankfully enough, the Google Pixel 3a and 3a XL users can now rejoice, as their devices will be eligible for Android 12L beta. The Beta 1 build, by the way, is scheduled to arrive come December 2021 and the final release is expected to be somewhere during Q1, 2022.

As mentioned earlier, one can expect the Android 12L update to be a mere incremental upgrade over the Android 12 and things like notifications, quick settings, lock screen, and home screen are going to be optimised for devices with rather unconventional displays. Two-column layouts are something which are catching up in the foldable realm and Google appears to be optimising its OS for that. Google Play Store will also notify the user if and when a specific app is not optimised for large screens.
