WhatsApp had been testing the ability to send disappearing voice messages in beta, and it has now made the feature official. This is a part of the ‘View Once’ feature introduced in 2021 lets you send photos and videos, which can be viewed only once. Now you can send voice messages that can be listened to only once.
WhatsApp disappearing voice messages
WhatsApp has started rolling out View Once voice messages globally, and it should reach all users in the coming days. Similar to View Once photos and videos, voice messages will also be marked with the “one-time” icon, and can be played only one time.
How to send disappearing voice messages
- The process is the same as sending disappearing photos and videos. All you have to do is open a WhatsApp chat, and tap on the microphone button to record a voice message.
- Once you’re done recording it, tap on the “1” icon just above the send button. Now your voice message will be sent as View Once.
- The recipient can open it, and listen to it one time only. The voice message disappears from the chat after it has been opened. But it will still be indicated in the chat that a View Once voice message was sent.
This feature works only on mobile devices for added privacy as you can’t open View Once photos and desktop on WhatsApp’s desktop clients.
WhatsApp has been testing this feature on its Android and iOS beta apps. It’s available to select beta testers who were able to try this feature out before the official release. Since the rollout has just started it might take some time before the feature reaches everyone. You can still check by following the steps mentioned above.
This feature does seem safe and private but do note that on Android devices it’s possible to record the View Once voice messages with the native screen recorder. So it’s advisable to still be cautious while using this feature.
