WhatsApp working on Airdrop-like file sharing feature for nearby devices

Highlights
  • WhatsApp’s new feature will let you share files with nearby devices.
  • It works similarly to Nearby Share and Airdrop.
  • This feature is currently being tested out, and it’s expected to launch soon.

WhatsApp is working on a new feature that will make it possible to share large files with devices nearby. It’s similar to Google’s Nearby Share for Android phones and Apple’s AirDrop for iPhones. But since it’s WhatsApp, this feature is expected to be even more seamless.

WhatsApp nearby sharing feature

  • The new WhatsApp feature is available with the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.2.20 update. But it isn’t available for beta testers yet so you won’t be able try it out.
  • It will let you share files through WhatsApp with nearby devices. There’s a new ‘people nearby’ section on WhatsApp according to the screenshot shared by WABetaInfo.
  • The screenshot shows that both parties need to have the feature turned on to send and receive files. Your visibility will be shown with your WhatsApp name, and your phone number will be hidden to non-contacts.
  • The recipient will have to open WhatsApp and shake their device to see your share request.

WhatsApp says that file sharing is end-to-encrypted as well. But there’s no word on the maximum file size allowed by WhatsApp. Seeing how it’s nearby sharing we’re expecting this feature to be capable of sharing large sized files that would otherwise not be possible through the app. It might also be possible to share files without internet connectivity like Google does with Nearby Share.

WhatsApp’s file sharing feature is still being tested, and there’s no word on when it will be available to all users. But we should see it on the beta platforms soon.

WhatsApp update fixes camera bug

The same WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.2.20 update also comes with a bug fix for a camera issue. Some beta testers were unable to start the camera after downloading a beta update. Turning it on would trigger users to restart the device. Now this issue has been fixed with the latest WhatsApp beta update so the camera should work just fine.

You can download the latest beta update from the Google Play Store.
