Jio 5G has been launched in various cities throughout India.
Jio's 5G network has been officially launched in India. The telco will initially roll out its 5G services in key Indian cities and later expand them to other regions. Dubbed Jio True 5G, the services are expected to reach every town, talukdar, and tehsil by December 2023. Additionally, the Jio 5G will be based on a Standalone 5G network and have zero dependencies on the 4G infrastructure. This will result in faster connectivity speed and reduced latency. Apart from this, the Jio 5G will be completely made in India and is said to deliver a speed of over 1Gbps. Here's a quick look at the Jio 5G launch date in India, plans, SIM, speed, compatible devices, and more:
Jio 5G services were officially announced in India by Mukesh Ambani at the Indian Mobile Congress (IMC) 2022 on October 1st. This was followed by the launch of the Jio True 5G Welcome offer where the telco opened up invitations for its users in select cities to get their first hands-on experience of 5G. Jio claims to expand this offer to more regions in the upcoming weeks. The company has allegedly completed 5G rollout planning for 1,000 cities. Furthermore, Jio is working on a data-driven 5G network that will be based on targeted customer consumption revenue using Heat maps, 3D maps and ray-tracing technology for precise coverage planning to target high-consumption and high-perception locations.
The Jio 5G services are available in the following cities and states for now, which are as follows:
Jio 5G services are also available in Assam, Bhopal, Bhubaneshwar, Chandigarh, Uttarakhand, Patna, Lucknow, Trivandrum, Shillong, and 200 other cities across India.
There are a couple of ways to check your smartphone's compatibility with Jio's 5G network. Simply head over to Jio's website and follow either of the methods mentioned below.
Through OTP
Through device compatibility section
In case you're planning to buy a new smartphone and are doubtful whether it supports Jio 5G or don't have an active Jio mobile number, the following method is for you.
Here's how you can check the availability of Jio 5G in your area.
You don't need to upgrade to a new SIM in order to use Jio's 5G services. The telco has assured its users that the existing 4G SIMs are forward-compatible with 5G and will work with both networks.
As for the 5G plans, the company has not yet revealed the details, but for the time being, subscribers can continue using the current recharge plans priced at Rs 239 or above to use the 5G services. The telco is offering unlimited 1Gbps+ speeds in the invite-based ‘Welcome Offer' program. Users are just required to have a 5G compatible smartphone and need to enable 5G from the mobile network settings.
For users with 5G-capable devices who are not on the Rs 239 or above plan, Jio has introduced a 5G upgrade plan. Priced at Rs 61, the plan offers unlimited 5G services and includes 6GB of 4G data. However, the Jio 5G upgrade plan works only on top of prepaid recharge plans with denominations of Rs 119, Rs 149, Rs 179, Rs 199, and Rs 209. Additionally, it is important to note that this plan is only available in cities where Jio True 5G has been launched and the user has received an invitation to the Jio Welcome Offer.
Pretty much every 5G device launched in 2022 is compatible with Jio 5G services. Here's a quick look at the list:
While these are all the Jio 5G services compatible smartphones, some of these devices are yet to receive updates that will enable their 5G settings. The government has reportedly asked major manufacturers, including Apple, to roll out the update as soon as possible.
To use Jio True 5G services you're required to have a 5G-enabled smartphone and be present in a location where Jio has officially rolled out the services. We've covered a detailed procedure on how to activate Jio 5G on your Android smartphone and iPhone separately, but here's the gist of it:
As part of its ‘Welcome Offer' program where Jio users will be randomly invited to test out the Jio True 5G network, the telco claims to deliver speeds of 1Gbps and above on the users' current ongoing data plan. The company also showcased similar speed capabilities at its AGM 2022 and during the trial period.
That said, as per Ookla's ‘Speedest Intelligence' report, Jio 5G was able to touch download speeds of 600 Mbps in a test. Apart from this, 91mobiles has exclusively reported, the network could only achieve a download speed of 420Mbps and upload speed of 412 Mbps, with a latency of 11ms and 9ms jitters, on one of the pilot testing devices. Even with that, the Jio 5G speed is significantly faster than the 4G speed.
With that being said, Jio is likely to offer better 5G services compared to its arch-rivals. The telco spent over Rs 80,000 crore in the recently concluded spectrum auction and acquired the coveted 700MHz band, which is believed to have a wide base coverage, with a range of 6-10 kilometres. This would be beneficial for rural and underdeveloped parts of the country. Additionally, the Jio has acquired 10 MHz of the band in each of the 22 circles. Apart from that, the most common band present in phones, the n78 band with 3300MHz frequencies has also been bagged by Jio to provide 5G in cities and all the major circles. It is also the only telco to have bought spectrum across bands which are considered key for efficient 5G services globally.
Jio has partnered with tech giants such as Nokia and Samsung to build its 5G infrastructure.
Interestingly, Jio 5G will be using the standalone (SA) 5G network, instead of non-standalone (NSA), which uses 4G infrastructure. The SA Jio 5G is said to deliver new and powerful services like low latency, massive machine-to-machine communication, 5G voice, Edge computing and network slicing, and the metaverse. "Jio 5G will be the world's largest and most advanced 5G network. Most operators are deploying a version of 5G, called Non-Standalone 5G, which is essentially a 5G radio signal delivered over an existing 4G infrastructure. This Non-Standalone approach is a hasty way to nominally claim a 5G launch, but it won't deliver the breakthrough improvements in performance and capability possible with 5G," per the company.
Jio claims that its 5G connectivity will not be limited to just the privileged. Its aim is to keep the network within the reach of the masses.
Jio has announced its 5G-powered Wi-Fi services in high-footfall areas like educational institutions, religious places, railway stations, bus stands, commercial hubs, and more across India. This is said to bring 5G speeds to those who don't have 5G devices yet. The Jio 5G Wi-Fi can be accessed by anyone with a smartphone.
It is no secret that Jio is also working on a 5G smartphone. The handset is expected to be among the most affordable 5G phones in the country. If rumours are anything to go by, the upcoming Jio 5G phone could be priced somewhere between Rs 9,000-Rs 12,000 (around $120 to $160). This will help penetrate the company's 5G network across the country. Jio is likely to offer the 5G phone bundled with its 5G plan.
